This surprise quilt will be for my son Benjamin who graduates in June 2010. My plan is to put this quilt out at the party for all of his friends and family to sign their names or leave him messages. I tried to leave lots of white areas for that. It is a twin size quilt that was machine quilted (which I am HORRIBLE at.) I am going to buy a few different size quilt pens in maybe two colors for everyone to sign with. Now just to keep this quilt out of site for one year. I DO like to finish things early.
I love it what a wonderful idea this will be a quilt that he will cherish forever. GREAT JOB!!!!
It looks great!!! You'll have to another pic after it's signed. I think his friends will enjoy it as much as him!
What a great mom, and having it done this far in advance. This quilt will be loved for a long time by your son. I think you did well with the quilting. Besides you tired and that is worth more than anything. I think this will be prefect for all his friends to sign.
This is really nice Judy, I love the mascot in the center........I'm sure Betty will check this out. She is wanting to do one for Matt also for graduation. Such a neat idea! Two thumbs up!!
I love it! It will be so much fun for his friends to sign and it will be something he will cherish for a LONG time. Just a suggestion, but maybe print out the proper care for a quilt to give him, so it will last a long time. I didn't know this stuff when I was younger and I put a blue quilt on a bed in full sun and it faded soooooo bad, the blue now looks almost as white as the background. Also, I put one my grandma made on my son's bed and it was used and abused and it fell apart after so many washings. If I had it to do over again, I would definitely take better care of it!! I'm thrilled I got another one of her quilts from my mom.
Pam, that is a wonderful idea. With the blue and the ink that will be used to writing on it. You just never know, so I like to test things out myself.
I have one more suggestion. the pens that you are planning on using, put them though the wash a few times with hot water and see what happens.
I have a certain brand of pen that I have used for years. I will get a few of them...they come in different thicknesses. I do know that after lots of washings they fade a lot......so this will be a quilt that won't get used a lot. This will be his fourth quilt...so interchanging them often helps them last longer.
My oldest son has had the same quilt on his bed for the past 13 years.....it is threabare and coming apart. I told him to pick a new pattern and I would make him a new one...He said NO....THIS is my quilt.
That is a great quilt! You did a fab job and I am sure it will be treasured for many generations.
What pens have you found that work the best, for washing, etc?
Some of the pens I have gotten, dry out very fast, and they are not cheap.
Any tricks to make it all come out better?
Try keeping your pens in a zip lock baggy and stored horizontal ! I hope that this works.
Judy I love this idea on signing a memory quilt. And you are so good about getting it done so early...I want to make a T-shirt quilt and one in solid grays, blue and black. If anyone has any great ideas on What to do for t-shirt quilts please let me know.....Happy quilting...Boop
Betty, don't people use interfacing or fusible webbing when making quilts out of T shirt material? I thought someone here had a post about that once.
Auntjudy, This quilt with your labels, and the border is prefect.
T shirt quilts. I made one many many years ago for Mike's Boy Scout Troop. They had a T shirt made for the boys on one of the outings, so I made it part of the quilt. I did have to interface with a very light interfacing. This is something that do not buy a cheap interfacing for. If it will need to be washed, you need to use good supplies, or it will fall apart. T shirt quilts are pretty easy to make, I have seen several done and they all look great.
Hi all. Cheryl told me when I finished the tribute to my son for the yearbook, I had to tell her what I came up with. I have struggled over this for about three months with this. My other kids were a cinch.....so I don't know why this one is so hard. Is it because he is my baby??????!!!! Anyhow here is my tribute....and it goes way over the 40 word maximum. (but everyone does.....but I did try to keep it short)
Dear Ben

(sniffle, sniffle, blow nose, sniffle) ok...how is that? the quoted words are from a song by Mark Harris about your kids growing up and leaving the nest. The gopher reference is because it is the school mascot. He is dresses at the mascot for pep rallies and games.
Judy, it's absolutely perfect!! I can't say anything more!! You rock girl!!!!
This is perfect, I will have to copy it to put on some quilt in the future. Wonderful !
