This is an old quilt, that my sister wants me to do something with. It was my great aunt's that she made. It has a lot of damage from old age, and a lot of love. The material is really faded. My idea is to make something with parts of the quilt that is still in good shape, and make several to give to the members of my family. Now the problem, what to do? I had some ideas, but nothing that is really working for me. One was to cut a part of the fan out put it with a picture of my great aunt and frame them. Then I thought, I could either make Christmas stockings or tree skirt. But most of my family have that covered. Then the idea of a table runner, but the material is so weak, I don't know how I would reinforce it so that it could be used and loved. One thing for sure, I don't want it to seat in a closet.
Have any idea's.?
Is there a way that you could get it appraised? Before cutting it up? If it is not worth much because of the condition then you could divide it up. Maybe putting a picture in the middle like you said and then framing it in a frame that has protective glass. Like a shadow box frame. It looks like they are rather large squares, but hanging in a sewing room would be wonderful! Mounting on something that will not deteriorate the fabric maybe. But I would look for someone that could help you to determine whether or not it should be pulled apart. I think that the libraries may have some info on historical quilts or maybe if there is a historical society in your town then they may be able to steer you in the right direction. Hope this helps….
Happy Quilting Hugs!
I think that is a great idea that I should talk to an appraiser. That never came to mind. I did talk to my sister about what she would like to do, and we are thinking that framing whatever is good maybe our best option. The blocks are big so that is part of the problem, because we don't have much wall space to hang it. So we are still thinking.
Thank you for your input, it has been a help.

Someone suggested to make angels out of the material. I thought this would be a great deal, and so did my sister. I could reinforce the material with interfacing so it would be stronger. Now I need an angle pattern. Does any one know of where I can get one, that will work? I would want the pattern to be about 3 -4 inches high, but I would think I could adjust the pattern to any size. The angels we can make several for us and our children.
The good block with little or no damage, we are going to frame. So now we have a plan.
