Wanda's Jewel Box quilt

I've always wanted to make a jewel box quilt.  This picture is a jewel box quilt made by my friend Wanda.  The block is easy and we could make the block  in different jewel tone colors -  emerald green, amethyst purple, ruby red, topaz yellow, sapphire blue, tourmaline green and turquoise blue with either a white or a black background.   That's my 2 cents worth!

Love it

I would love to do this.

Could the due date be as far off as maybe July 30Th or even Aug 30Th? That way we can enjoy the summer and not have to worry about getting something done. What would everyone else like for a date.

The jewel tones, I would be a little afraid that I would not use the correct material. So can you give us some suggestions of what materials or colors are the best.

One more suggestion, Maybe just do the small center block and then give small pieces of material with each block so you could do the slashing yourself. The blacks can be so different from one member to another. I would think the quilt would look the best with the same black.

If we do it with only the center block, you could do the exchange 2 or 3 times to have enough for a whole quilt. So everyone could decide how many sets they would like to do. Just as long as you use different material for each set.

I hope everyone understands what I have just wrote. Sometimes when I write, it is very clear to me but not to the rest of the world.

This are just suggestions, and is up to the group to make the final choice.

glutton

are we glutton's for punishment????  I just may have to sit out the next block exchange.  I say that now....but I can almost guarantee I will click on "join" in the end.    I want to finish some UFO's and start some new tops.  With the green blocks still on their way....I just dont' want to get over my head.  Fall would be a great time for this, in my life.....but that is just me.......one opinion.

Pam.......

Hope you don't mind, I found my Jewel Tones, and loaded it to your posting. Since we are unable to add pictures on the same threads when we post......This is the one I made last year. I bought all the marble fabric at Hancock's even the black marble. I think the black really sets the colors off better than white. I would love to do another one.......we could all center in on getting the fabric at the same place, so that way our blacks and colors would be the same and we could just change our block designs and maybe make them all the same size. (Like Hancock's or Joann's.) I have to agree with Judy, I need some time before I start another so maybe by the middle of September I would be ready. I could work on it during August, we have our Auction Quilt over Labor Day and then our quilt show mid October. And that takes me some time!

my 2 cents worth....Nora

This is one gorgeous

This is one gorgeous quilt!  I love the setting and the colors.  But is it a jewel box quilt?  Maybe I have the wrong idea.  I always think of JInny Beyer's jewel box pattern when I think of this, but perhaps this is just a different way of setting the blocks.  Well, anyway you look at it, this quilt is just wonderful.

Chris,

The first picture (the one I posted) is a Jewel box quilt, with the traditional jewel box block pattern.  The second quilt (that Nora posted to confuse us!) is another pattern, but is an example of jewel tone fabrics.   There can be many more jewel tone colors however.  Jewel tones are deep, pure colors of blue, green, purple, yellow, red, and pink.   I was looking for a color wheel with Jewel tones, but couldn't find one.  If we decide to do blocks in jewel tones, I'll pull examples of jewel tone fabrics from my stash and take some pictures.  I love them against a black background, but someone made the observation that it would be hard for everyone to match the black background fabbrics.  So this might be better done in whites if we decided to use this as an exchange block.    A mixture of whites looks fine, but a mixture of blacks, not so much I'm thinking.

I guess I should have seen

I guess I should have seen that.  Thanks for the explanation.

4 cents

Hey Nora......that quilt is gorgeous!!!!!   ughh    my favorite but TRUE saying.....sew many quilts .....sew little time!!!

LOL....

Thanks Judy. I had never really heard of Jewel tones before. Jim told me the way of getting the colors for it. The bride hates pink so I did not add the pinks......my next one will have PINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOl.....

pinks

I like the one I did, but Pams I like the most.......it's got to have PINK in it!!!!

4th Block Exchange

I would love to be a part of the jewel quilt block exchange, but I too, would need for it to be due later in the year.  So many projects, indoors and out.  Could someone tell me the rules on a block exchange? Do we make twelve blocks?  I'm new to this. Thanks

Sommer

I think the consensus is that we should wait a few months to do the next block exchange since everyone is so busy right now.  Maybe we can start one in July or august.  The number of blocks we make depends on how many people sign up to join the exchange.  It's kinda hard to know till the very last minute because people drop out and new ones sign up, but we will have a deadline to sign up next time and then hopefully, everyone that signs up will commit to staying in!  We've had 10, then 8 and now I think we have 8 again for the 3rd exchange.  A host is selected (or volunteers) and everyone sends their blocks and a self addressed stamped envelope to that person and she divides the blocks and mails them out.  I am hosting the 3rd block exchange and blocks are due the end of May.   I don't mind hosting the exchanges at all and will be happy to do it again if everyone would like me to.   We pick the block pattern, size, colors etc. by discussing it in posts and then kinda making a joint decision based on everyone's input.  So far, it's been easy to agree on everything.  We'll table the next exchange till we see how busy everyone is over the next few months.   It's a lot of fun, so I hope you'll join in!

You will need to catch me up on this....

I just joined All Our Quilts today and wanted to join a group and LOVE block exchanges, so if someone can let me know what to do, I sure will catch up!

I love the pictures and sad to say, the Black theory is true, unless we take care of our own black and exchange the block in some way that all we exchange are jewel tones.  We can choose weather we like white or black for our own quilt and incorporate it like sashing as the background, HUH???  Just an idea...

Thanks - OH!  and look'n for some quilt'n buddies too!

Happy Quilt'n! ~ Kim :-)

Pam

Pam, Thanks for letting me know how it works!  I would like to be a part of it!   The jewel tone quilt is gorgeous.    I will keep watching and waiting for the info!   Also, Hi Kim, it's nice to meet you.  You will never find a nicer group of people to talk about quilting, and other issues!  Welcome, hope to see you a lot more.

~Lee Ann~

You know I'm in....

I like the idea of creating our blocks using just the jewel tones and then letting us do the rest with our own black or white.  Cool idea!!  I suppose they don't have to be 12-1/2" blocks, they could be smaller....  Welcome Kim, it was nice meeting you on the chat earlier!!

K. Jones

It is great to have you become part of our little group. Each block exchange that we do, someone is the organizer of the group and you can always contact them with questions. It looks like this exchange will be due in July or Aug. but that doesn't mean you can not start your blocks now. The summer months are busy for all of us, enjoying the weather, etc.

I hope to get to chat with you soon, in the chat room.

I'm going to make a suggestion

based on the input I've been reading.  Summer months are busy ones and many don't want to do an exchange when they could be outside gardening and boating and camping and having cookouts, etc. etc.  That is the case for me for sure.  Summer time is the time we have visitors and we plan on working on the boat, taking a sailing trip, planting a garden, working in the yard and I'm still trying to get some painting done!  So, my suggestion would be to  start signing up for an exchange now, have a deadline for signing up by the end of July and have the blocks due at the end of September.  That way, if someone wants to start sewing during the summer months, they can, but they won't be due till Sept. so those of us who are too busy can wait till late summer to do our sewing.  I'd love to host the exchange again, unless someone else really wants to do it.    Is everyone in favor of making Jewel Box quilt blocks in jewel tone colors?  If so, I'll look for a block pattern on line and post it.  Most of the blocks I've seen are 16", so with 12, you could make a nice size throw quilt or you could add extra blocks of your own to make a bed size quilt.  In looking at the pattern, it's not really something you can do without the background fabric because each 4 patch and half square triangle segment has the background fabric.   So, we could do four things....  1) make it with white background fabrics, any white on white.   2) Another idea would be for one person to buy black fabric and mail a piece to each participant, but with postage, that would be a little more expensive.   3) Each person use several different blacks, either solid or black on black, so that each block would have scrappy black backgrounds and then it wouldn't matter so much if they didn't match.  or 4) find some black fabric on line and each of us order a yard or two of the same fabric.     What does everything think?   Give me all your feedback!!

Great news!

OK, I vote for #4 and #3 in that order...hehehe, but #4 is my preference...

Happy Quilt'n! ~ Kim :-)

Pam, all great ideas

That is prefect for me. We want to get our UFO's under control first. I enjoy being outside every second I can in the summer.

GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and I vote for #3 or 4!!

3 and then 4

because I would rather go to Hancocks to bu it, that way we would have the same thig . Buying on line....I'm not sure about....But I'm flexable.

No Hancocks up here....

I don't even know where there is one.  There used to be one in Flint, but it went out of business, so that wouldn't work,  And even if everyone went to the same store, how could we be sure we were all buying the same black fabric?  I could get to a JoAnn's in an hour, but wouldn't every store carry more than one black cotton fabric and even it the only had one, it could be different dye lots in different parts of the country and still wouldn't match!

Great Idea

would love to join this exchange, my problem would be the black as I live in Canada I would have to figure out what to do about the blacks.

how about this??

How about if I buy a large quantity of black fabric and everyone who wants to participate in the exchange can buy a piece from me?   I found some black cotton broadcloth extra wide(108" wide)  for 6.80 per yard.   Still looking for more discounted black cotton fabric.  Also, our local Ben Franklin is going out of business and all their fabric is 30% off.  I could check to see if they have black fabric and buy a bunch.  Let me know what you think of that idea!

Pam

Sounds great Pam, if you can handle that, that would be our solution on the black for sure!

Glad to see this is starting to take form! WooHoo!

Happy Quilt'n! ~ Kim :-)

sounds good to me....

sounds good to me....

sounds fine to me

Black material

You really have to be careful with buying black material. Wash it first to make sure it does not fall apart. That has happened to me. The dyeing is so strong it can make the material weak.

That maybe I good idea about one person buying the black. I would not want that person left with a lot of material that would never be used. We need to talk about how all this would work

I'd agree

and be in on buying it from you Pam!

I've done some figuring....

I designed a Jewel Box quilt on my Quilt Pro program with 12 inch blocks using black for the background and 7 different jewel tone fabrics.  9 blocks will make a quilt that's 54" square and that includes a 3" inner border  and 6" outer border (or one border that's 9").   The fabric requirements are 1 fat quarter for each of the jewel tones and 7/8 of a yard for the black.  That will make at least 10 blocks.   For 12 blocks, the black fabric requirement goes up to 1 1/8 yard, but they can still be made with 7 fat quarters of jewel tone fabrics.    I'm not sure if I can, but I'll try to post the picture of the quilt as designed in a post.   And Sue, I will probably get more than we'll need if I can find a good sale and just add the remainder to my stash.   I don't have much black fabric and I do like it as background fabric in quilts, so I won't mind that at all.   But i'll need a pretty accurate count before I buy or order fabric.  I'd like to have 9 blocks because that would make a nice size quilt.   12 would also work and would make a 54" x 66" quilt with borders, which is also a nice throw size quilt.

Good
