Finally finished my quick trip.  And it was NOT quick!!  LOL  I made so many mistakes and had to  "unsew" more on this quilt than I've ever had to do before.  I changed my mind several times about fabrics and had to take out some and exchange some.  But finally got it done.

NICE......

Pam, great job!!!!  I have yet to get mine started....soon I hope, but yours turned out FANTASTIC!!!!  Don't you just hate having to "unsew"??  I'm becoming a Pro at it though!!

beautiful quilt Pam

I love the color you chose.  Really pretty and full of light.

quick trip

I too love the colors on this one..........great job!

Beautiful!

Very nice job Pam! I really like the colors and the pattern is great to. I also love the boarder you used and to incorporate it into the quilt...wow. Of course, I love flowers like roses....I get it from my Grannie.

PS.......love the closet stash to! LOL.....

Trip around the world

This pattern is a great one to do. I love the colors. Are you done with the quilting and all? What are your plans for this one? Great job.

Thanks everyone

Thanks for the nice comments.  Sue, just the top is done, not the quilting.  I may use this as my first machine quilted quilt.  It should be pretty straightforward to machine quilt.  I have no plans for it, I just saw the pattern and thought it would be a good one for some fabrics I had.  The fabrics included a border fabric and then 2 coordinating prints, one big floral and a small floral and then I chose the other fabrics from my stash to go with it.   I think the "Quick Trip pattern would normally be quick and easy to piece, but I ran into some problems of my own making.  I decided I'd make the quilt bigger, so I added 3 fabrics, got it all cut and all the strips pieced, when I realized that I was making the quilt longer but not that much wider because the pieces are rectangles not squares.  And since I didn't have enough fabric to cut more pieces, I had to take out three rectangles from each strip (of course, these were not sewn side by side!)   I also had used 2 different fat quarters that i thought were a pretty good match, and used one fabric on one half and the other in the other half.  After i got the two halves put together, I didn't like them at all.  To me, they stuck out like a sore thumb.  So, i searched my stash and found another yard of dark rust and cut all 64 new rectangles, cut out he old ones I didn't like and then sewed in the new ones.  What  a job!  But I was happy with the results.  My hubby said he thought the other two fabrics were fine and matched close enough, but I knew I would hate it every time I looked at it if I didn't take them out.   To me, it was worth the work to have it look better.   I'm thinking I may use it in one of my upstairs bedrooms after I'm done with the quilting.... but who knows when that might be???  LOL

Tricks to machine quilting

Pam, there are tricks to machine quilting. So I will try to think of as many as I can.

The most important is basting, a lot. I don't know if you have ever pasted. You can do it with pins, or thread. You want to baste so it is close to each other. You will be twisting and turning this quilt a lot under the machine. If you do not have it basted well enough the material will twist and will not lay flat. Take the time to baste well.

I use a new sewing machine needle that is the size 10 needle. It will not make a big whole when the needle goes in. Use good thread, not cheap. The quilting will last longer.

When you start and stop, back stitch each time to lock your stitches. very important.

Color of thread, there are so many, enjoy. Try out the thread on sample material that is left over from the quilt. You should try a few and see what you like best. It is worth the time to do this.

Bobbin thread. You may have to change your tension so the bottom thread goes not come up to the top of the quilt.

I use a bigger stitch length than when I'm sewing on only 2 layers of material. The quilt is thicker so to have good stitches make your stitch length longer until you like it.

Keep your shoulders down. Not up to your ears or you will be hurting in no time. Relax!

If you are premarking your material, be sure you understand how the marker will come out. Will you have to wash the quilt when you are done to get it out. The blue marker pen that washes out are great, put you do have to wash it in cold water. If you use anything warm on it, it will set the mark for ever.

I put a card table behind my machine to make the table bigger and then something on the left side of my sewing table so the quilt will have room to lay down. The quilt will get heavy if it is hanging over the side.

This is all I can think of for now. I'm sure there are a lot more tricks to make it come out better and have fun doing it.

Maybe someone else also has ideas, I would love to learn more tricks to make this easier. Other than sending it out to someone else to do it.

Enjoy

Thanks for all the tips!

I have a walking foot and did my first machine quilting on the table runners and placemats I made before Xmas. This will be the first time on a quilt though. I just got a Hera marker and I may try that since I plan on doing only straight lines. I probably won't get to it for a while. I'll read up on it too. I have a few books on machine quilting. Hope I can do a nice job.

I'm sure you will do a great job
