Quilt retreat
I thought we should start a forum about the discussion of a quilting retreat.
There has been some discussion of meeting for a quilting retreat this summer.
This discussion was started on this post. www.allourquilts.com/content/sampler-quilt if you would like to read what the discussion has been up to this point.

Maybe this way more people will see the posts and want to participate.
That is what I was hoping for, because the posts about the retreat you written within a posting about something else. There would be members that would never see it.
I'm thinking about hosting a quilting retreat at my house in Newberry Michigan sometime this summer - or even fall. We have a 5-bedroom house and there are also several motels nearby. I have a quilt room big enough to seat 6 (or maybe 8) people at tables with their machines and the dining room could hold several more (but would have to be moved for meals.) There are two quilt shops within driving distance, one about a half hour south in a woman's home (I have not been there yet, as it just recently opened) and one is about 45 minutes north in Paradise, Michigan. There are also some sights nearby if we wanted to do some sightseeing. We are 20 minutes from Tahquanemon Falls, an hour from Pictured Rocks, an hour from the Soo Locks in Sault St. Marie. I'd be willing to teach a class if anyone was interested (and I'm open to any ideas) or we could pick a project and all work on the same thing or we could each bring projects of our own to work on. The main idea is to get together to visit, sew, get to know each other, have some fun, and hopefully, accomplish something. Soooo, everyone give me some feedback about interest for a retreat, best times to have one, ideas of what to work on, etc. etc. etc.
Boy you are way up north! LOL......nice little town to. It was 7 degrees this morning while I was checking you out. Brrrr. It is just beautiful up there. How do you get across to your area? Go across or do you have to go around? I have never been that far up there before. Travis City yes on a basket convention but not that far up......I bet spring is just great and summer? Is it hot? Humid?
We are way up north. You just go up I-75 and cross the Mackinaw Bridge, take a left on highway 2, drive along Lake Michigan for a while, then cut north to Newberry. It's not only cold here in winter, but we get lots and lots of snow. This is our first winter up here, so I'm still adjusting. But the summers here are wonderful. I LOVE the summer temps. We moved up here August 1st and we visited here in June and July to look for a house, and the temps were always in the mid 70's, not humid and a nice breeze. I thought, "I may hate the winters, but I'm sure gonna LOVE the summers up here!" It hit 81 one day and everyone was complaining about the heat! LOL It's just beautiful up here in the summer and fall. I'm anxious to see what spring is like!
If I can sneak a few vacation days in late summer, early fall, I would love to come up for a retreat, as I've never been on one, and would be open to whatever you and the others decided!
As long as it is not to late.....do not do well if it is to cold.
Maybe August? 4 days? Maybe wed eve through Sun morn? August is beautiful here.
that sounds good to me!
August 16th? LOL...around my Birthday! just kidding........Does anyone have school kids to contend with???? That may make a difference to.......I do not. Just grand babies.
I'm thinking Wed, Aug 19, till Sun, Aug 23. Just preliminary thinking at this stage. And my friend just made a quilt called "Quick Trip Around the World" that would be fun, quick and easy for a retreat quilt. Any thoughts?
Pam - I'll be stuck here from April thru October. We have horses and they take most of my time when the weather is good. September will be weaning time and we should have 8 or 9 foals to get settled in for the winter. We also have cattle and September will be weaning time for those too - they'll need gathered, vaccinated and branded. I guess I don't have a good time to be gone when the weather is pretty. Everyone can take lots of pictures and let me know what I am missing. Darn
Well, we may plan one in August and then who knows? If it's a success, we may plan another in October!
Hey Pam, Jim wants to know about the Bass Fishing? Any good?
I'm sure he knows more about the fishing here. We are about 30 min from Lake Michigan, a little farther from Lake Superior and about 20-25 minutes from 3 small lakes, which are reported to be good fishing. A friend of ours from church fishes every day, but I don't know what he catches. We're also just a few minutes from the tahquanemon river and I know they fish there too. We haven't been fishing up here yet.

Sounds great to me if I haven't moved to Texas by than, That would be the only reason I wouldn't want to be gone. Michigan is so beautiful and hubby could fish.
Would anyone be interested in making a Victorian Crazy Quilt during a retreat? I have LOTS and LOTS of velvets, some brocades and satins and I've been wanting to make one with all the embroidery and embellishments. One of my friends wants to learn how to make a crazy quilt and I'm hoping she will come if I have a retreat in August. Everyone could bring any "fancy" fabrics they may have, plus laces, buttons, etc. and all would be welcome to help themselves to my abundance of velvet fabrics. Just a thought!
I would love to do a crazy quilt!! I have been wanting to learn to do one as well since I saw my Mother-In-Laws!! Hers is in the same fabrics that you speak of and it so beautiful.!! You can not go wrong in using up your velvet scraps for that, go for it, you will not be disappointed! It is so generous of you to offer to open up your home.
I've been wanting to make a fancy victorian crazy quilt for a long time. I bought some satins in different colors and have collected so many brocades, silks, and especially velvets. We can definitely do one if you can make it to the quilt retreat. Still not sure when, but will definitely plan one if enough people are interested. I still have work to do on some of the bedrooms before they're ready for guests, but hopefully, I can get back to painting once my foot is a little better. I'm thinking early fall. We're planning a sailing trip the week after Labor Day, so maybe late September or early October would be a good time.
Oh how wonderful.....I can see it now with beautifutl threads. I hope that your foot is doing better....I love the fall. I am interested in coming up if I have to thumb it.....Ü Happy quilting...Boop
When I was in High School, I asked a girl out... She gave the worst excuse you can give... She told me she had to wash her hair...
Well the thought came to my mind, that I just wont be able to make it... I have to wash my hair:)
Lynnielee
It won't take that long to wash or dry your hair.
To funny! Mike are you going to be washing your hair or is it that you just do not want to be around a bunch of us ladies?? LOL......That's OK.....you have no time, your dating.....so just send your Mom instead.......
This all sounds so nice, but I don't think I will be able to make it. We went away in Jan. and will do some small trips later this year. I would love to meet all of you in person. Will want and see how the year goes, will keep in mind.
I went to Michigan, and its about a 13 hour drive... it wasnt bad, ended up spending less then $200 to get there and back... The trip is allot of fun, you end up going through some AMAZING city's on your way there. I told you (Mom) that it would take only 13 hours, and you said I was Nuts. In the end, I was right:) Anyways, I would go, if there was something for me to do, but I am not exactly a quilter. The biggest baddest expense is hotel costs, but that too shouldnt be bad... With your car, you can expect more money on gas then my Saturn that pulls 40mpg on highway! What is GREAT, is that in some states the speed limit hits 70 mph. Add to that the 10 mph that cops usually ignore, and WOW are you going fast! Then you hit some guy in a BMW or something, and your easily topping out over 100mph... VERY Stressfull, but an amazing experiance... In the end the ride was the best part of the trip! Butt thats another story... Also, I just heard on the News, Air fair is DIRT cheep! Basically the Airlines just need to fill there seats.
Mike
Mike you maybe right, it may not be that far, it seems so far away from here. Will have to think about it.
Sue...perhaps we should have a get together for people who live near or around the Rochester NY area....I know I could never make it out to MI.
We are having a major house repair done right now......(yuck, yuck and double yuck) $$$ Our basement keeps flooding...so they are fixing it....but for now that means MUD. (With all the rain and the work not being totally finished yet...it backed up into our basement..but it wasn't just water....we got mud in the basement too. ( I am trying so very hard not to be discouraged. Our dog is tracking in sooooooooooooooo much mud!)
The mud sounds awful and then a dog that loves to go where you don't want him.
As far as a retreat here in Rochester, NY I think there is only a few around here. Maybe as we grow and more join, then we can have several at different parts of the country.
sounds like such a fun thing to do. I have been to several basket conventions and they were so excellerating and relaxing.....I sometimes feel that I live out in the middle of no were land and have to drive 40mi to get anyhere or get anything. Judy I am so sorry to hear about your basement. We are having alot of flooding around here in our area and I feel so bad for everyone. I hope things get a bit easier for you..Sue are you still going on your retreat? I am praying for ya and the baby to have things work out for you and your daughter.........Good luck Happy quilting...Boop
Betty, I am still on my way of going to the retreat Wed. No baby at this point, so I have started to pack. I love these retreats we have so much fun. I wish you could all come.
