This is another of my "Row by Rows". The row I did for this one is the one in the foreground. It has already moved on to the next person. Each row was done by a different person.
Row by Row you said that you have sent it on to the other person. Is this done in your guild or the internet? It looks like it would be allot of fun. I have never done a row by row with a group before. I really like your colors, and your points look right on. Good job
Thanks Sue,
My guild does this. It is fun!
I can't wait to see what people have done on the one that is mine. I will see it in December and find out.
The one above used 30's fabric. That is what the person who gets this one specified for hers. The person who did the first row is the owner of it in the end.
I sent a lot of fabric with mine, but I did not specify any rules on it. I left things up to the people who worked on it to do whatever they wanted to. I will post it on this site when I get it back. "The only problem I have had on this project is with myself. I always wait til the last week of the two month period to work on my row.
This time I am trying not to do that. I started yesterday on the one I am doing the final row on. The last row on them is called "Hearth and Home". I am doing log cabin blocks for this one.
As usual, I have "point envy"....grin.
How does the row by row concept work? You mentioned sending fabric with yours. So you pick out the fabric and then everyone uses that fabric to make a row and pass it on? Are the rows passed on to the next person as well so they can see what's been done?
Also, looking at the images, it looks like the rows are different lengths? How's it all tied together? Will you be able to show us a final?
Very intriguing!!!!! Must know more....lol
Hi Linda,
I can only tell you how my guild is doing this.
Everyone who wants to be a part of this group signs up for it. You each do the first row. You put it in a brown bag with any rules you would like people to follow and any fabric you would like them to use. You don't have to add any fabric to your bag if you don't wish to. (All bag are plain brown so you can't tell them apart.) Numbers are put on the bags so that the people running it can tell who has which bag. They also use the numbers to keep you from picking your own bag or a bag you had on a past month. The people running it are the only ones who are suppose to know what bag is in whose hands. You are suppose to keep it secret as to whose bag you have. (Hopefully I have not given the secret away by posting it here. I figured the risk of the owner coming to this site wasn't that great at the moment. I should have this site posted in the guild newsletter, but not until after this Row by Row is completed in December. *wink*) Every two months we exchange the bag for a new one. You are assigned what the row is to be each month. First month on ours was "stars", second month was "flowers", third was "baskets", etc. You aren't given the pattern to follow, you pick that yourself. All finished rows stay in the bag with the first row and fabric. This way you can jugde by all the previous rows what you think will work with the overall quilt. You don't sew the rows together. That is for the owner to do when they get it back. There may be different lengths of rows as long as they fall within the length requirements. The one that owns it can add sashing or anything else to make it all go together in the end. A little creativity may be required.
I don't have a completed one to show you, but when mine comes back I will have to assemble it. I will show you it then.
If you have anymore questions I will do my best to answer.
Making Quilts for other people is a great idea, that I really love. I wish we could do something like that here, but unfortunately we can not promise anyone that the fabric and idea will be done:( Some people may receive stuff and never give back, or will promise to do it, and never do. I would love it if we could though!
True Mike! I have heard of a few problems in this area when it comes to x-stitch round robins. It only takes one person to mess it up for everyone.
It is a much better thing to do locally in a guild situation. If there is a problem, they can go knock on the door of the person who is not returning theirs. If they are across the country or around the world it is a lot harder to get back!!! If this group decided to do it, it would have to be at everyones own risk.
The whole concept is just too cool. I can't wait to see yours when you get it back and assembled!!

Neat idea, Our quilting group on Everyones Apostolic Quilters is doing a square, the midnight star, and one of the ladies has a quilting machine and she's putting it together to donate to EA to be sold/auctions. I'm the corodinater and it's hard to get anyone to do anything with our busy lives.lol
I don't know where the idea for "Row by Rows" came from, and I had no idea how much I would enjoy doing it!
When it comes to charity work it is hard to get some to participate. It is usually the same people who do most of the work. I have times when I want to concentrate on getting some of my own UFOs that are piling up done, and times when I enjoy the charity work. There is nothing to match the feeling that you get when you give without expecting anything in return!!

True that!
