This is the sampler quilt that I teach in one of my classes.  I start with the 9-patch block and progress each week to a harder block, ending with the appliqued block in the lower right hand corner.  At the end of the class, they have the skills to pick up any pattern they see and make it!

Oh my!

I haven't gotten through all of your posts yet but I'm pretty sure this one's gonna win my "top dawg" vote. Of course, at the rate you're going, you'll prove me wrong!

WOW!

Thank you!

I loved the colors in this.  I found these fat quarters on sale at a craft store and bought 3 or 4 of each print, so I'd have enough for a quilt.   I have the same 12 blocks in teal and burgundy fabrics, but I had so much of those fabrics, I decided to keep making blocks and make it a queen size quilt.  It's one of my UFOs that I'll get to "someday"!  LOL

sampler

I love samplers. When I started out, a hundred years ago, I did mostly samplers. I wonder where they all went to???

samplers

I love them too, as long as the colors are "controlled".   And I like the blocks separated by sashings or it gets too confusing for my eyes!  This was my third sampler.  They are fun to quilt because you don't get bored quilting the same block over and over again.

What size...

are the blocks in the sampler?  That would be something fun for me to do, to practice some different blocks, being self taught, you only teach yourself what you're working on, and I really like this design!!!!!  Are there books available for the samplers?  I don't know that I've ever been so excited about quilting as I am now!  I'm sure most of it is because you all motivate me to keep at it!  And thank you for that!

Cheryl,

The blocks are all 12".  I have a couple of books that are samplers, but I just chose 12 blocks that I liked and if they weren't 12", I adjusted them.  But you can find a lot of patterns for 12" blocks since it's a fairly common size.  There was a website that had a lot of free patterns for 12" blocks, but for the life of me, I can't remember what the website is.  You might be able to find it if you did a search for free patterns for 12" blocks.  If you'd like, I can send you the patterns I used for mine.  They are numbered from the easiest to the most difficult and I think they are great to learn new skills on.   I also prepared quite a few patterns for the ladies in my class who wanted to make their quilts queen size.  Just let me know and I can send them to you.

emailed you...

Hey Pam, just sent you a private email :)

Pam

I really like the green with the purple. Esp the plaids. Ya know we have big homes here in northern Indiana to.......Cheryl and I could use you here! hehe..

HAHAHA

Good one Nora, I told her the same thing ;)

be careful....

what you say!  I could show up some day!!!

And....

You'd be welcome with open arms!

I just had a brainstorm...

We were talking about a quilting retreat at a B & B, getting together to quilt, etc....   And here I am in a 5-bedroom house, with a quilt room big enough for 6 sewing machines on tables, a dining room big enough for eating or overflow sewing and even a husband who's a great cook!   Maybe I should plan a quilting retreat this summer!  We could even take a trip to the quilt shops in the area and to see Tahquanamen Falls or the Soo Locks in Sault St. Marie!   What do you think?

I'll get north somehow...

Pam, I guess I'm bound and determined to get up that way soon!!!!!

Michigan?

Woooo......That would be to cool!

Nora,

If you hubby doesn't want to go, we could always go together, but I wouldn't be able to go for a whole week!  Something to think about ;)

Michigan

I have never been to Michigan. That is a place that I thought about several times would be nice to see. What would I do with my hubby, we would have to drive together? That is a long way to drive myself. Oh what to do? It sounds like a lot of fun to get together.

Sue,

Michigan is very beautiful, especially in the summer and fall.  Especially up North where Pam is.  Well, so I hear from my Father anyway, because he travels up there once a year to see his brother up near Sault. St. Marie.

I'm thinking this is meant to be!

I got an email today from one of my quilting friends.  I haven't talked to her in quite a while.  She and her sister are going to a quilt retreat in March and she was saying we need to start planning our next quilting vacation.  She said she would be happy to just come up here for a week and then she suggested..... are you ready for this?????  She suggested that I have a quilt retreat up here!!!  LOL  I'm thinking I just have to do this.   I'd like some input from anyone who might like to come to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for a quilt retreat sometime this summer or fall even.   What month would work best?  A long weekend?  A full week?  A new class or work on your own projects?  I could fill my bedrooms and there are lots of hotels in the area as well if there were a lot of people who are interested.  We could keep costs low - enough to cover food and of course money to spend at the quilt shops!!   I'm thinking this is a great idea!  Sue, what does your husband like to do?  There's camping and fishing and sightseeing - we're not far from tahquanamen falls and soo locks and pictured rocks.  Where do you live?  Maybe you could travel with a quilting friend?  Things to think about!

Long Weekend here...

I could do a long weekend, or if you did a weeklong, I could always come join you for the the last few days, or first few days!! I think that would be fun.

Cheryl,

I think I'll try for a whole week and would be thrilled if you could come even for a few days!   I'll have to start making some preliminary plans... well, I suppose I should talk to my husband about it first!  LOL

That is a beautiful sampler

That is a beautiful sampler and a wonderful way to learn to do quilts!

Thanks Linda

I had mostly beginers in my classes and they did so well progressing from the easy blocks to the more difficult.  Most of them did not enjoy the last applique block though!  LOL You really have to love hand applique to enjoy that block!

Wonderful idea

Sounds like a wonderful idea to me.  I've never been to Michigan but have always wanted to go.  This might just be the perfect excuse to take that trip and I have just the sewing friend to bring along too.

Quilt retreat, forum started

I hope this will keep the discussion more organized. I have started a forum about the quilt retreat. That way all the information will be in one place. Any one can start a forum when a topic gets started like this one did.

So please move the comments for the retreat on the new forum.

The best, Sue

Retreat? Did someone say Retreat?

I love quilting retreats.  My husband doesn't mind if I go along or bring him along.  Depends on how long the retreat is and where.

We'll be attending one nearby at the end of March.  I get to sew and he hikes or attends local sports games.  We both do what we like and we see each other at night.

Chris

oh yes....

We've been talking about a retreat this fall I believe in Northern Michigan, so we'll have to get back to that discussion soon!
