If you had money to buy only ONE template for squaring up your blocks, what size would you buy?? 12 1/2 X 12 1/2 " or 6" or 9" blocks.........I would like to know. THANKS! Nora

Nora,

I have a 6.5" square and a 12.5" square ruler and I use the small one the most for squaring up parts of a block, like half square triangle sections and for cutting squares.  I use the 12.5" square ruler for squaring up blocks after sewing them.  I wouldn't want to use anything smaller for big blocks, because I think the more ruler you can get along the edge of your block, the easier it is to get a square block.  Did that help at all?  LOL

wooooo weeee

the quilt in that photo is really cool.  You going to make that?

Judy

It is the Star-burst Spinning Star and the website is craftandfabriclinks.com   It was designed by Christina Sherrod and it is a free pattern. This is going to square up to a 6.5" block. Happy quilting...Boop

oops

and I can't answer the question.....I currently have NO square rulers.  So I can't say one way or another.

Pattern

Judy, Jim is working on it.....template wise that is. It looks like fun.

Pam, So you make different sizes......I want to do up templates for our show in the fall. And an even square would be easy. That way all the blocks would be the same. Easy for beginners. I want to get the most used square, to cut.......

Both

Like Pam I use both....the 6.5-inch one for blocking as I'm piecing and the 12.5-inch one for the finished block....can't live without either.I have a 9.5-inch one but rarely use it.

RIGHT NOW....

I'D LOVE TO HAVE a 12-1/2 because that's all we seem to do here!!!  LOL....So girls...for this self taught girl here, explain HOW you use these templates??????????????????????

this helps a lot ladies!

Thank you all.......Cheryl, I use mine and the one at RSVP for squaring up our blocks so that they are all the same size. Mine and the RSVP's is plain. Jim did put an X in the middle of mine, corner to corner so the I would have a center space to match up with. Then I just cut all around it so that I knew they are square.

Cheryl,

I use my 12.5" ruler for squaring up blocks (which is perfect for blocks that are supposed to be that size) but also for blocks that are smaller like 10 inch.  I just line up the center and/or the diagonal of the block on the ruler and then trim the right side and across the top, then turn the block and do the same thing to the other side.    I also use this ruler to make sure the corners on a finished quilt top are square by  placing the ruler in the corner of the quilt and trimming away any excess.  I wouldn't cut away any portion of a block (which should already be square!) but the border sometimes gets out of square after sewing it on and that helps to square up the corners.  I also use it to cut strips after folding the fabric in 4ths.  It's probably the ruler I use the most.

Nora

I found this pattern on line and I hope to try this soon. I have a 6.5 square and was told to use it just like Pam said. Thanks Pam it is good to have ya back. I have not used it yet for I just bought it..I do need to purchase a new ruler. Mine is getting chopped up??! I am trying to get all the right tools set up for the fall so I can have time to just quilt...This weather reminds me of fall. We just received the rain that was so much needed...and it has been very cool.So I will probably be back outside. This is fair week ya know for me and I can not wait to see how everyone is doing on the judging.!  Happy quilting...Boop

Jim made some 4,5,6 inch

Jim made some 4,5,6 inch plates up for squaring up blocks. This is why I was wandering. He put a pretty cheap price on them. We did not sell anything yesterday at the show. But did get an order for  a rocker repair and a special order for a quilt ladder.

Betty, can't wait to see Matts pictures. Not sure if we will make it there. We have a funeral of a 17 year old from our church that died this week. I will be busy with that on Monday. It was a shock. Car acident.

In the next couple of weeks AJ wants to come up and go to Alco. Probably on a Friday. If that is ok....she wants to see your house to, told her all about it.

We have Kodie today, and Blake has two lower teeth now! He shows every one but Grandpa Jim them! LOL.......

Nice quilt, Nora!

I like the quilt you posted here - great color plan. And, I'd agree about 12-1/2" square being most needed.

6.5

I have a 6.5 inch and a 3.5 inch.  I think the right size really depends on the size of block or in my case - 1/2 square triangle.  I made 72 1.5 half square triangles yesterday and could not have done them without the smaller square.  I use them by pressing my blocks really well, then line up the diagonal making sure the first two sides I trim are bigger than the desired size blocks.  I spin my little green cutting board and cut the last two sides with the diagonal on the seam and trim the sides to my exact size I want for sewing.

Size?

I think Kimmie is right...You almost need all the sizes to square up after piecing.  I think that I could use a 12.5 since I do not have one...But Nora should you have the grid lines on it to be sure that you are measuring correctly? How much will Jim charge for a 12.5"     Judy, and Nora the pattern of the block that you are showing is called Star-burst Spinning Stars and  the one templates that Jim made for me I am still calling it the Braun Star..LOL Thanks Jim and Nora your Braun star came out pretty cool..Enjoy your summer...Boop
